Even though most leaders know that their success depends upon the success of others, many fail to do their part in creating the environment necessary to make it a reality.
Here are two big steps that you can take as a manager to increase retention of your key talent while earning their loyalty and discretionary effort:
- Give Before You Take. Focus on their needs and their success before you worry about yourself. This includes treating them fairly as individuals while simultaneously ensuring that you create a healthy overall organization in which they can thrive. Treat them justly. Do what is right for them and the organization. Provide opportunities for employees to learn, be challenged, and grow. When people struggle, provide a high level of support to get them back on track. Above all else, have their back and be willing to put yourself at risk for them to succeed.
- Be Ultra Clear. Ambiguity breeds dissatisfaction among high performers and allows under-performers to hide. As a leader be focused and clear when it comes to strategic direction, goals and roles, success and failure, rewards and consequences, and expected behaviors. If you want to increase employee retention, you cannot be too clear.
