Do you typically begin your team meetings with a joke or good news? If so, you are doing just what employee engagement training researchers recommend. They have learned that when team members are in a good mood they are far more likely to be productively engaged and ready to work on the job at hand.
An article by Kyle Emich of Fordham University cites his study in Organization Behavior and Human Decision Processes in which he shows that groups with at least one member experiencing positive affect are more likely to seek and share information. This is not rocket science. We all know that if we feel good, we are more ready to reach out to others.
Within your work team, feeling good will promote an atmosphere of cooperation where you are happy to share what you know and ready to ask about what you do not know. The result? Better work product and more engaged employees.
